Logistics and warehousing trends in 2018

Delivery times under pressure

Companies will be finding ways to decrease their turnaround time from the time of ordering to delivery. Customers are demanding 48 hours and same day and they are willing to pay extra for this service

Big online companies are looking for ways to drive down same-day delivery costs.

While this is good for customer satisfaction, the courier-type companies will experience increased pressure over 2018, they will have to work harder and smarter to meet industry demands.

More companies will consider looking at in-house delivery service.

The options are to use a delivery service or trying to do the deliveries in-house. In-house delivery is an option when companies use their staff and vehicles to do nearby deliveries.

Unconventional delivery solutions will be explored

The international trends show that drones, driverless vehicles, and robots are being considered for deliveries.    Some of the challenges in these areas are the loss of the customer service aspect, job losses, air-space rights, crashes and technology-based challenges.

Safety issues will increase

Decreasing delivery turnaround time impacts pace which impacts road and warehouse accidents, this will point to increased training needs.  Cyber security, a not to be forgotten threat, will always have threats and upgrading security will need constant review.

Warehousing will become more regional

While companies are pressured to decrease delivery lead times, they also need warehousing solutions that support these shorter delivery lead time demands.

There is a trend towards bringing products close to the consumer and is resulting in demand for more regional warehouses and fewer major warehousing hubs.
